Протокол внутренней маршрутизации (IGP).
В отличие от RIP, который ранжирует маршруты по одной условной метрике ("весу" маршрута), OSPF определяет топологию сети и оценивает каждый канал между маршрутизаторами на основе целого набора характеристик, позволяющих прокладывать по-настоящему оптимальные маршруты.
В силу повышенных требований к вычислительным ресурсам и программному обеспечению, протокол OSPF не так уж и часто встречается в реальных сетях, как можно было бы подумать, приняв во внимание все его преимущества перед другими существующими IGP-протоколами.

открытый протокол “ кратчайший путь первым”
Протокол, осуществляющий выбор наикратчайшего маршрута передачи на основании данных о состоянии узлов и связности сети, хранимых в таблице маршрутизации. Такая таблица заполняется в процессе обмена текущей информацией данного узла с соседними. На основании этих данных пакет последовательно пересылается по наикратчайшему пути от одного маршрутизатора к другому до тех пор, пока не достигнет пункта назначения. Для сетей IP протокол OSPF описан в документах RFC 1247 (первая версия) и RFC 1321 и 2178 (вторая версия).

Протокол маршрутизации по состоянию канала (link-state protocol) в стеке IP, позволяющий маршрутизаторам в одной автономной системе обмениваться информацией о маршрутах за счет периодически рассылаемых сообщений о модификации. Каждый маршрутизатор периодически проверяет состояние физических соединений с каждым из своих соседей и передает полученную информацию другим соседям. Используя полученную информацию, каждый маршрутизатор строит дерево кратчайших путей с собой в качестве корня для нахождения самого короткого пути в каждую точку назначения и построения таблицы маршрутизации. Разработан на основе протокола RIP. Стандарт IGP для Internet.
